Cowboys vs 49ers Preview
Training camp for the Dallas Cowboys hasn’t been about who’s on the field, but rather who’s not on it.

Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott has still not reported to the team, despite having two years left on his contract. He’s seeking a long-term deal that would give him a substantial bump in salary. Elliott is still on his rookie deal, which puts him 10th among running backs in terms of average annual salary at $6,239,086.

The Cowboys have not been shy about feeding Zeke the ball. Last year, Elliott had a monster workload, with 304 rushes — 43 more than any other player — to go with 77 catches, collecting 2,001 yards from scrimmage. He’s also led the NFL in rushing in two of his three seasons as a pro. The team also has to sign quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper to extensions, as both can become free agents as well.

On the 49ers side, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has already been ruled out. Garoppolo is coming off an ACL tear, but is expected to take the field in the coming weeks of the preseason.

San Fransisco is also dealing with an injury to Nick Bosa, who the team took with the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft. He is not expected to play in the preseason.

The game wraps up the first week of preseason play with all the NFL squads active. The exhibition season kicked off last week with the Hall of Fame Game, pitting the Denver Broncos against the Atlanta Falcons. The Broncos won the plodding preseason tilt 14-10, scoring a late touchdown to record the victory.

For most teams, the preseason consists of four preseason games — the Falcons and Broncos being the exception that play five. Starters mostly see limited reps in the preseason, with playing time peaking in the third game. The games are meant for teams to evaluate talent deeper down on the depth chart and dwindle their rosters to 53 players.

The preseason games run through Aug. 29, with the kickoff to the NFL’s 100th season taking place on Thursday, Sept. 5 with NFC North rivals Green Bay and Chicago facing off.

Bengals vs Chiefs Preview
The Chiefs had arguably the league’s most potent offense a season ago, ranking first in points, yards, touchdown passes, yards per pass attempt, scoring percentage, yards per drive, and points per drive en route to a 12-4 record and an appearance in the AFC championship game.

On Thursday, head coach Andy Reid revealed quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 MVP, will play the first quarter against the Bengals.

“I do it by quarterbacks, so Patrick [Mahomes] has the first quarter and then Chad [Henne] has the second quarter, [Kyle] Shurmur the third quarter and Chase [Litton] the fourth quarter,” Reid said, according to Chiefs.com. “Then the guys fall in. Everybody will play in the game. The main thing is that we get some of the young guys some playing time. You normally cut down the game plan a little bit for this. Just take some of the simpler plays — the easier plays that you’ve run during camp — and let them go out and play.”

In 2018, Mahomes’ first season as a starter, he completed 383 of 580 passes (66 percent) for 5,097 yards and a league-leading 50 touchdowns.

“I’m glad we get to play at Arrowhead so guys get to feel what it’s like to play at home and how to go out there and excel on our field,” the 23-year-old said of the clash with Cincinnati, per Chiefs.com.

The Bengals went 6-10 last season, the last of 16 campaigns with Marvin Lewis at the helm. The team and the head coach announced a mutual split in December.

Cincinnati then replaced Lewis with 36-year-old Zac Taylor, who spent the previous two seasons as an assistant under the Los Angeles Rams’ Sean McVay.

“I’m excited to see our guys up front on both sides of the ball really compete,” Taylor said on Thursday, according to Bengals.com. “You get a chance to evaluate skill players over the course of the spring in non-padded practices because we’re throwing the ball and you get to see those guys. [This game is] really about the offensive linemen, tight ends, backs in protection, and the D-linemen and linebackers. When you’re competing against someone else, how quickly do they see it, where are they ID’d, and are they ID’d correctly since we are going up against someone we haven’t faced before. Those are the guys you really get a chance to observe and talk about what you saw on tape, whereas you get a chance to see skill guys every day at practice. I’m excited to watch those big guys up front on both sides of the ball.”

Rams vs Raiders Preview
The Rams had arguably the league’s most explosive offense in the NFL a season ago, ranking in the top three in points, total yards, first downs, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, yards per carry, yards per passing attempt, scoring percentage, yards per drive, and points per drive en route to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance.

On the other side of the ball they have Aaron Donald, who, according to his peers, is the league’s best player. The defensive tackle led the NFL with 20.5 sacks in 2018 and claimed his second consecutive AP Defensive Player of the Year award.

“You’ve been watching? He looks pretty good,” head coach Sean McVay said during training camp last week, according to TheRams.com. “Like I said, I think the biggest thing is just the way that he affects his teammates. Having him here, what that represents — when he turns it up, you see why the production is what it is and why he’s the special player that he is. It’s just been great having him out here.”

Saturday will mark the Rams’ second consecutive contest against offensive lineman Trent Brown.

The 26-year-old started every game at left tackle for the New England Patriots last year, including their 13-3 Super Bowl victory over Los Angeles. In March, the Raiders signed him to a four-year, $66 million contract with $36.75 million guaranteed, making him the league’s highest-paid offensive lineman.

“I mean, I just, I want more,” Brown said Sunday, according to Raiders.com. “I feel like people think I’ll get the money and then just become lazy but no, I want another huge contract. I want more rings. You know what I mean? I want more of everything. I’m thirsty for it.”

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr endured 51 sacks in 2018, the third-most in the league and the 38th-most in NFL history.

“He just comes in and works,” Carr said Saturday of Brown, per Raiders.com. “He’s real quiet. Real quiet, but he’s a great guy when you talk to him. Any of those young guys, those O-line guys, you just watch that guy and you’re like, ‘Oh yeah, he works.’ Everything social media nowadays, you watch the guy on Instagram, he’s working, grinding every day. [Inaudible] does some stuff for O-line only. I mean he was pushing thousands of pounds, a truck. This dude’s a baller.”

Defensively, Oakland recorded just 13 sacks in 2018, dead last in the NFL. New England and the New York Giants had the second-fewest sacks, at 30 apiece.

Oakland went 4-12 in their first season under head coach Jon Gruden.

North last season and just missed out on the playoffs, which ended their run of four straight appearances (2014-17). The Bucs were one of the worst teams in the NFL, finishing 5-11 and last in the NFC South.

The Steelers had a record eight players in the Pro Bowl last year. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been with the team since they drafted him in 2004 and has guided Pittsburgh to two Super Bowl Championships.

Look for wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster (1,426 yards, 7 touchdowns) to have an even more impressive season after Antonio Brown was traded to the Raiders in the offseason.

On the defensive side, defensive end Cameron Heyward and outside linebacker T.J. Watt were both Pro Bowl selections. Hayward had 52 tackles and eight sacks, while Watt tallied 68 tackles and 13 sacks.

Fans in Pittsburgh might just be the most excited about rookie Devin Bush. The Steelers traded up for the Michigan linebacker and selected him with the 10th overall pick.

The Bucs are hoping to turn their 2018 misfortunes around with a new coach at the helm. Bruce Arians last served as the Arizona Cardinals head coach from 2015-17 and came out of retirement to coach this team.

His tough love mentality and the addition of defensive coordinator Todd Bowles should give the Bucs hope for 2019. Offensively, it’s a make or break year for quarterback Jameis Winston.

Running back Ronald Jones has added muscle weight and should provide a 1-2 punch at running back. Winston’s main target will be Mike Evans, who led the team in both yards (1,524) and touchdowns (8) last season.

The focus of the NFL Draft for Tampa Bay was addressing the defensive side of the ball. That started with linebacker Devin White out of LSU, who became the first Buccaneer linebacker selected in the first round since Derrick Brooks in 1995. Upfront, the squad released veteran Gerald McCoy and signed Ndamokung Suh. Expect the starters to play 6 to 12 series on Friday night.

Vikings vs Saints Preview
The Vikings run out mostly the same offensive unit as last season with the line seeing the most overhaul coming on the line. Still featuring the dynamic receiving duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, don’t expect much to change on the offensive side of the football this season as the Vikings look to keep featuring the pass-happy attack that pushed them to the brink of a Super Bowl appearance. That said, running back Dalvin Cook is looking for a breakout season after battling back from injuries to post a promising 2018 campaign and has shown potential to be an impact player in both the run game and as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

The Vikings defense still has Anthony Barr as the anchor of a defense that remains mostly intact. While Sheldon Richardson is no longer holding down the middle of the defensive line, the Vikings brought Shamar Stephen to help fill the void left on the interior of the line. As a result, expect the Vikings defense to put up numbers in line with what last season’s unit posted.

Meanwhile, the Saints trot out a team that looks incredibly similar to their 13-3 juggernaut from last season. While the offense is missing Mark Ingram, Alvin Kamara looks more than ready to shoulder an increased load. Elite receiving weapon Michael Thomas is back on a new contract and re-assumes his role as the lead receiver for Drew Brees. New addition Jared Cook looks to make his mark on the passing attack as well and offers the Saints a passing weapon from the tight end position they haven’t had in a few years.

Defensively, the Saints also run out a fairly similar unit. With some new depth pieces filling out the front seven, the Saints didn’t dramatically improve nor did they get drastically worse. Instead, look for the Saints to put forward another league-average defense capable of creating turnovers and keeping them in games. One intriguing addition is former first-round draft pick Eli Apple, who the Saints hope can help bolster the secondary. Apple is still extremely young and has massive upside, yet is coming off some inconsistent years on a very bad Giants defensive unit.
